NYRR Coogan's Salsa, Blues, and Shamrocks 5K - Marathon Qualifier 3/9

I got up at 6am this morning to run my 3rd NY Road Runners Club race. This one was in Washington Heights, which is, in case you didn't know, just on the other side of the George Washington Bridge from NJ. I mention that because I didn't know where that was until a couple of days ago. I figured Manhattan ended on the north end of Harlem. Anyway, this race was sponsored by Coogan's Restaurant, which is apparently a Washington Heights institution.

The Coogan's Salsa, Blues, and Shamrocks 5K started just in front of the New Balance Track & Field Center which seemed like a really cool place to run in the winter, if you lived nearby. I don't know if anyone is permitted to run there, but it would be sweet if it was open to the public. They also had what looked like a cool running store. My friend, Dave, from Virginia should come check it out so he can agonize over all the overpriced shit he won't buy.

The race started at 165th Street on Fort Washington Ave and went north roughly 1.5 miles into Fort Tryon Park and then turned around and came back down to finish in front of the Armory. Along the way there were 3 or four different bands playing different kinds of music. It was really cold and windy. So cold, that I saw the Banjo guy taking shelter in his Chrysler Le Baron with his straw hat and his red and white Footlocker vest.

I've been running without an ipod or a stopwatch. I think it's less distracting and easier to pass the time without the distraction of trying find something I want to listen to and dealing with the headphone wires tangling up in my shirt. I just let my mind wander and try to keep up with the faster runners near me. I just push as hard as I can keeping the total distance in mind so I don't burn out. It's working okay, I guess. I had a pace of 9:03 today which is a little slower than my personal record, but it was a good pace for me. Not too hard to maintain and no pains in my side.

After the race they gave us orange wedges, bananas, bagels and water. Holy crap. Those were the best oranges I have ever eaten.

The New York Road Runners club is amazing. They must have had at least 100 people working for them at the event. The had two water stops set up and they always have tons of signage. The results for the race were on their web site about an hour after the start of the race - maybe even sooner. They've really got their shit together.
